Nothing says romance like 7 hrs in the car driving through 3
countries. We wouldn’t have it any other
way for our 3rd anniversary!
Left Rothenburg on the A7 at 10:45, stopped for lunch with Kat at a
biergarten on the Danube in Neu-Ulm an hour later, then continued on our way
through Germany’s Bavaria
& Austria’s Tirol, to the A22 in northern Italy. Took longer than we wanted it to…we’ll blame
that on a long wait for cheaper gas with everyone else at the Austrian border,
a slow two-lane road that wove thru the German/Austrian Alps, and a long detour
back after missing the quick exit south to Italy. We’re not timely people, but some things are
out of our control! Finally arrived in
Montegalda just before 20:00 for pizza at Hotel Hart!
Highlights
- Driving
on the autobahn: We never have trouble making good time on the highway
here…wonder why?!
- Lunch
with Kat: Twice now we’ve found ourselves driving through Neu-Ulm. Kat brought us to the same biergarten we
visited last year. It’s great to go
here with a German-speaker who can translate the menu! I was stuffed after having half a roast
chicken with kartoffelsalat (potato salad). Joe liked the German hot dogs with
lentils and spatzle.
- Bavaria-Tirol
drive: Although slow, driving thru the Alps
and pine forests was scenic.
- A22
South of Innsbruck to Bolzano: Italy’s
Alto Adige region makes for an enjoyable drive when you’re passing small
towns at the base of the mountains on either side of the autostrada, lots
of castles perched on cliffs, and lush green vineyards sitting pretty on
terraces along the sides of the mountains.
- Haribos:
The German gummy bears are 10x better and softer here than the same packs
at home. We finished an entire bag
on the drive today!
Lodging: Hotel Hart, Montegalda…very spacious private room
and bath w/ bfast and parking, lovely hosts go out of their way to make your
stay comfortable. They will even get you
mini ice cream cakes from the local gelateria for special occasions.
