Florida/Carribean 2011 – Day 2 - February 20, 2011

Nana cooked a mean breakfast with delicious scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausages, and toast.  Afterward, we headed for Resident’s Beach for a quick walk that turned in a shelling session.   Found several pretty conch shells and other types on the end closest to Tigertail Beach.  The only problem we ran into was the smell that we couldn’t seem to get rid of even after soaking them at Nana & Papa’s.  Unfortunately, we had to leave by 11am to make the drive across the state to catch our cruise.  Our visit to Nana & Papa’s was great…just wish we could have stayed longer!

We made good time crossing Alligator Alley to Fort Lauderdale.  No signs of wildlife today…just a straight shot across.  Good thing Nana told us to pack lunch as there were no exits for most of the drive.  Once we got on the highway, it was probably only a 2 hr drive tops.  Spent a few stressful moments trying to find a Target to get some last minutes items for the cruise.  Fortunately, we made it in time to catch the last shuttle from the rental car drop off to the cruise ship...

Boarded the Nieuw Amsterdam around 2:45 and had just enough time to find our room and sample the pizza before watching the boat pull out of Fort Lauderdale.  Explored the ship a bit before dinner.  Our room is 4004 on the port side, second from the front of the ship.  We have a great balcony to sit on, and Cathy & John are right next door.  The Nieuw Amsterdam is a new ship commissioned in Venice in July.  Cathy & John already sailed on her once in the fall in the Mediterranean.

We took the early dinner seating at 5:45pm so dinner came quickly tonight.  Met our waiter, Tourino, at Table 39 in the Manhattan Dining Room.  Enjoyed the mushroom crostini and French onion soup tonight.  Joe reports that his prime rib was tasty, although Aunt Judy still gets the prize for her New Year’s dinner this year!  Following dinner, we went to the Welcome Show to meet all the entertainers onboard, followed by some lounging in the comfy chairs in the Crow’s Nest.  Then it was off to bed!
