Florida/Carribean 2011 – Day 1 - February 19, 2011

What a way to start the trip! Woke up at 8 AM at the Aquarius Condo Complex in Marco Island Florida to a full breakfast spread.  Kate cooked up some eggs, pancakes and sausage, and I even got a fresh grapefruit cut by the expert (Papa!).  Delicious!

Headed to Resident’s Beach with Nana for a mid-morning tanning session…I mean burning session.  Completely forgot how powerful the sun is down here, and with a little breeze, it didn’t feel like we were getting much sun for the one hour we were lying out.  Kate was even careful about putting on some sunscreen and covering up and she still got fried on her legs.  Water temperature was 65 today so it was a bit chilly for swimming, but Nana & I got went in anyway.  Met a few of Nana’s friends at the beach.  Everyone is getting excited about the Prom coming up on Wednesday night at Aquarius...

Back at Aquarius Nana pulled out sandwiches for lunch and lemon cake.  Then it was off to 2:15 Mass at San Marco, where Papa was on duty as usher in his official blue blazer.   Mass was packed even on a sunny Saturday afternoon.  Papa says the official count was 507 today.  They had an army of 14+ Eucharistic Ministers at Communion.  The Euchs even get fancy medals hanging on thick red ribbon to wear during Mass.  We definitely brought down the median age of the crowd today to about 65!

Went to check out the pool when we got back.  I think we hit it too late in the day, though, because the sun was already getting low in the sky and it was chilly sitting on the pool deck.  Finally got to see the clubhouse that Kate’s grandparents always rave about.  It was a cute place!  They even have outlines of dancing couples on the sliders and a countdown going for the Prom!  Looks like it will be a good time.

For dinner tonight we drove down to the Snook Inn situated on the Marco River.  Talk about a happening place.  It was definitely the place to be.  We waited 40+ min. to be seated, but it wasn’t that bad because they had a pretty rooftop deck to sit on and live music while we waited. Enjoyed some Landshark Island Lager (Made by Jimmy Buffet) and Nana enjoyed a nice glass of chardonnay to pass the time. We got a nice seat on the porch after the wait, and took full advantage of the famous salad bar.  Even Kate ate salad tonight…a rare occasion!  Must have been good vinaigrette dressing! At Nana’s suggestion, I had some tasty fried grouper tonight…yum! Top it off with Yuengling in a can and it was in heaven. Had to practically roll me out of there after 2 trips to the salad bar and a final run up to get some fresh bread to take home!  I’ll definitely sleep well tonight…either from too much food or too much sun! Finished off the night with a viewing of a couple Law & Order Episodes to give everyone nightmares. A good day in Marco, and plenty reasons to come back soon!
