Canada Day 6: August 5, 2010

The weather did not improve when we woke up this morning.  It was raining and very foggy and overcast.  We slept in a bit and Chris made omelets for us.  After breakfast, we ventured out and walked down to the beach.  It was windy and foggy still, but at least it wasn’t raining.  We walked the length of the beach, collected some neat rocks, watched some surfers, and took some pictures.  Lauren also entertained us with seaweed twirling!

In the afternoon, we set off for a day trip and make the most of a rainy/foggy day here.  Stopped at two Salvation Army stores for some Canada apparel and souvenirs before driving to Peggy’s Cove.  Peggy’s Cove is a small fishing village west of Halifax with a scenic lighthouse out on the huge rocks.  We had fun walking around on the rocks and taking lots of pictures!  On the way back to Halifax we stopped at one of the SwissAir 111 Memorials dedicated to the plane that went down off the shore on September 2, 1998 due to an electrical fire.  It was a somber site that has become a tourist destination due to its proximity to Peggy’s Cove lighthouse.

We decided to head back to Halifax to catch the annual Busker’s Festival.  Made a quick stop at the Citadel and got in free a few minutes before closing.  Unfortunately we didn’t make it in time for a tour or video, but at least we saw some of the costumed guards and a nice view over the city of Halifax.  Afterwards we found parking near the Busker’s Festival.  Lots of vendors and street performers set up along the waterfront boardwalk for a week every year.  Saw a few stuntmen perform some rather bizarre and at times inappropriate tricks with chains, machetes, and flaming torches before begging for money from the audience.  There was also some interesting people watching as Halifax’s finest were out in full force. We weren’t all the impressed with the performers so after a few stunts, and one more Cows ice cream, we went back to “Larrytown.”  Only disappointment of the night was that Cows didn’t have Oreo so I had to get vanilla.  On the plus side, though, I did get to try the complementary homemade waffle cone.  Yum!

Back at the Beach Niche, Chris cooked up some quesadillas for us to eat as we made plans for tomorrow.  Ended the night with a great game of Clue, which I can proudly say I won!
