Canada Day 5: August 4, 2010

The rain continued overnight, but fortunately our tents held up and were not too wet in the morning.  We packed up all our gear and left the campsite by 9am.  Tim Horton’s was hopping when we stopped for breakfast.  It is essentially a Dunkies, but with more slightly more portion control.  Ate breakfast in the car as we drove towards Halifax in the steady rain.

It took a lot longer to reach Lawrencetown Beach due to the rain, but even in the rain Beach Niche on Wyndnfog Road was very cozy.  Grandma and Grandpa Houghton (Betty and Murray) welcomed us to their beach home, showed us around, and could have talked to us all night!  Beach Niche is cute…we have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen and living room all one house back from the beach.  We spent a while unwinding before driving into Halifax for the night.

Halifax was only about a 25 minute drive west from Lawrencetown Beach over a 75 cent toll bridge.  Can’t quite put a finger on what Halifax remind us of.  It’s a small port city that was a mix of several New England cities we’ve been to including New Bedford, Providence and Newport.  We found free parking since it was after 6pm and walked around on the quiet waterfront boardwalk.  Took some nice pictures of George’s Island offshore and the many dolphin statues that line the boardwalk before getting dinner at Harp & Thistle, a microbrewery.  Joe tried the Hop Rock IPA and salmon, and enjoyed both.  Mocha Broiled Chicken was very tasty.  Of course we sought out Cows for some dessert…Mud Puddle for the second time!  Then it was time to drive back to “Larrytown” and call it a night.
