Canada Day 3: August 2, 2010

It was another early morning for us.  Packed the car, drove our favorite lighthouse at MacCallum’s Point and made it to breakfast by 8:15.  Today, Diana made us an egg tart, bacon, and raspberry yogurt parfaits.  Had a few minutes to, bacon, and raspberry yogurt parfaits.  Had a few minutes to chat with Diana this morning about her garden and growing organic food.  Chris got some tips for garlic and might try to plant some this fall.  Also found out that it is some sort of Civic Holiday in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.   Although we would have loved to stay and talk, we had to catch an 11:15am ferry and had to leave.  Laur and I are definitely going to miss Maplethorpe tonight when we’re camping!

The drive to the Northumberland Ferry at Wood Islands took a little over an hour.  We made it in plenty of time to grab a few postcards and magnets before driving the Trailblazer onto the ferry.  Reminded me of our trips to the Vineyard at home.  The ferry connects PEI to Nova Scotia in about 75 minutes.  We enjoyed riding on the top deck and taking in the scenery for a bit.  We couldn’t resist another Cows ice cream on the boat.  Mud Puddle (vanilla with caramel swirl and peanut butter cups) was delicious!

We arrived in Nova Scotia at 12:30pm and started our drive to Cape Breton.  The initial drive past pine forests didn’t look much different than driving through Maine.  Stopped to make sandwiches and buy groceries…another classy parking lot lunch!  If we hadn’t hit traffic, we would have made great time, but it was after 6pm when we pulled up at Cape Breton National Park Campgrounds in Cheticamp.  Set up camp and made burgers, quesadillas and pasta in plenty of time before the sun went down, and ended the night by the campfire.
